Founded in 1906, the company began as the Simplo Filler Pen company producing up-market pens in the Schanzen district of Hamburg, eventually changing its name to Montblanc representing the highest peak in Europe at 4,810m. The Meisterstück name (English: “Masterpiece”) was used for the first time in 1924, for the top lines of fountain pens. The company was acquired by Dunhill in 1977, following which lower price pens were dropped and the brand increasingly focused on the high end luxury pen business as well as embarking on a successful diversification campaign into other categories besides pens, including watches, jewellery, fragrances, leather goods and eyewear.
Today Montblanc forms part of the Richemont group. Its sister companies include watch and luxury brands Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Dunhill, Chloé, IWC and Baume et Mercier.
